2019 special election

Update and Timeline of Events

Hello CASLI,

First of all, we’d like to thank you all for your patience and understanding over the past few weeks.  We five board members have been working alongside our staff and with help and consultation from some members to redirect our sails and bring us back on course leading into this special election. Thank you. Merci.

In response to issues stemming from the June 8, 2019, AGM and board elections, including the ‘no person’ option and ultimate vacant position of president, and subsequent resignations of vice president, 2nd vice president, and past president; the remaining board members carried a motion at the June 21, 2019, meeting calling a special election to elect candidates to the three executive positions: president, vice president, and 2nd vice president. The past president position will remain vacant out of respect to Silent No More.  To this end, the board has come up with the following timeline of events to run an efficient, election over the next five weeks. We have learnt that it is best to use time wisely to make for a transparent and successful election.

During this time, the CASLI office will remain open for regular administrative and financial business (save for the week of July 22-26 for summer vacation). Other programs and projects will continue to be on hold until the time a full board and office staff are in place to give proper attention and energy to their completion.

We understand this is a unique situation our association finds itself in; as such a unique special election is needed to steady the sails and bring us back on course to smooth waters, open to all members to feel seen, heard and represented.

As mentioned above, certain programs will need to be on hold. That being said, we recognize the concerns about the complaints process and the CES. During this time we expect members to uphold and adhere to the tenets of our Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct, to support each other, and protect the communities we serve. The WTK is still being offered, while the TOI is currently not.  We hope these elections will run smoothly and efficiently.

Thank you,

Your current board

Dave Bell-Patterson, Secretary

Anne Websdale, Treasurer

Carmelle Cachero, Evaluations Officer

Chrissy Montgomery, Director

Christopher Desloges, Director

Special Elections Timeline of event

July 15 - 26, 2019 Call for nominations - Now Closed

Members are invited to nominate colleagues or themselves to the three positions currently open for election. Candidates are encouraged to submit comprehensive biographies and platforms outlines their experience, goals and objectives for their position, the board, and the association as a whole.

*At this time, only Active CASLI members can run for the board.  We respect the interest from non-members and community members to join the board, however at this time we need to adhere to current bylaws. Motions might be moved at the next AGM to amend our bylaws to allow non-members to run for the board.

July 29 - Aug 9, 2019 Question & Answer Period

Based on feedback from the June 8, 2019, AGM, where members expressed concerns around not knowing candidates well enough to make a decision around for whom they should vote. We’ve allotted two weeks for members to submit questions to candidates (in ASL or English) about their biographies, experiences, and board platforms. In order to facilitate meaningful dialogue between members and the candidates, a discussion forum has been added to the website.  To join the conversation, please click the button below:

Aug 12 - 17, 2019 Elections

We will use the online voting platform www.securedvoting.com for our elections. This has been researched and found to be not only secure, but also efficient for a successful and transparent election. Every single active member (with voting rights) is able to vote once for each candidate.  The process is straightforward and will be explained in a follow-up email.

There are two possible formats for the online elections:

1)    If there are no candidates nominated for multiple positions, elections can run all one day and results shared the following day.

  • Monday, August 12, 2019 – Elections for all three positions

  • Tuesday, August 13, 2019 – Results shared with the membership

2)    If there are candidates nominated for multiple positions, elections will have to be spread out over the course of the week.

  • Monday, August 12, 2019 – Election for president

  • Tuesday, August 13, 2019 – Results for president shared

  • Wednesday, August 14, 2019 – Election for vice president

  • Thursday, August 15 2019 – Results for vice president shared

  • Friday, August 16, 2019 – Election for 2nd vice president

  • Saturday, August 17 2019 – Results for 2nd vice president shared

Aug 19 - 24, 2019 Meeting of new board

The new board will agree upon a time and date to meeting (virtually) to discuss next steps.

*Candidates running for the board should allow for time this last week to meet with the newly elected board.
